Once apon a time there was a little japanese games company called Nintendo, they made a grey box with a flap on which you stuck brick sized plastic cartridges into, pressed down then punched the 40" Power button, grabbed the hand punishing square controller with edges like razor blades and BOOM! Welcome to the miracle of Mario. Years passed and Ninendo released another console called a Nintendo 64... (32bit graphics & 32bit sound) see what they did there?? Clever! Nintendo in there gaming weird wisdom made a controller in the shape of an M or a 3 headed lady appliance if you will and a games developer called Rare decided to bash out a film based first person shooter for this new machine....... Goldeneye was born!! Based on the film with the same name featuring Pierce Brosnan playing the Tuxedo'd assassin, it followed the plot to a gaming degree quiet well, if you watched the film, then played the N64 version... you would know what was going to happen. ![]() The control setup was weird as the movement was done with 4 yellow buttons on the right side and the aiming was with an analogue stick in the centre of the pad. The D-Pad was kinda redundant! This (for some strange odd reason) worked for Goldeneye! VERY WELL!!! Goldeneye played so well infact that it became a gaming icon and most if not all other First Person Shooters (which we'll shorten to FPS) was compared to this! Goldeneye: Reloaded however was NOT based on the original... it was infact based on the Wii version which.. how can i put it wasnt a gaming icon mainly due to the awefull control system and outdated graphics!! Today we base FPS's on games like the Call of Duty and Halo series. This HD remake on the xbox 360 however isnt like any of the CODS or Halo's, and please DONT compare this to these!! They've changed alot of the controls for the 360 so it has the feel of most of the others out there but retains the arcade feel that made the original such a big hit so its easy to pick up and play. There is now a cover system which when your crouched behind something and iron sight you actually look over the top of the thing your hiding behind, and this works very well. If anyone really wants me to compare Goldeneye with other games i would honestly say.. the gameplay of Quantum of Solace (Highly underrated by the way!) and 007 Bloodstone mix. The story mode is indepth and embrasses the essence of the previous versions quite well although due to a liscensing problem ie Ninendo refusing to give it fully up, they've had to replaced Pierce Brosnan with Daniel Craig however this doesnt really interupt the game one bit, the A.I reacts very well to what your doing and the situation your in at the time and looks very good graphically... polished up from the Wii version with a visually appealing outcome! ![]() If you so choose to you can take the fight to your mates via the local splitscreen game modes and there's plenty of modes to choose from. Conflict, Golden Gun, You only live Twice, (a variant of Conflict with limited lives) Escalation, (weapons change with kills) Detonator Agent and finally Team Conflict. Online though is where its at!!!! Again with a staggering 13 different game modes, there's something here for players of all different styles to get there teeth into and it has a leveling up system similar to Modern Warfare with weapon levels and player stats increasing as you play and kill more to unlock more weapons and even characters including Baron Samedi, Jaws and Oddjob, looking forward to unlocking Oddjob as i really want the achievement for killing 3 in a row with his hat!!! My first online experience with this i found myself being killed loads by players throwing rockets everywhere, but for some reason i didnt care!! Next game i armed myself with a shotgun and went nuts!! And thats the thing with Goldeneye... it doesnt take itself too seriously! I will say this though, if your thinking of playing this and get really upset when other FPS shooters gets the accuracy/Damage/Range stats incorrect on weapons and you find yourself screaming and moaning that that gun you keep getting killed with is way overpowered and shouldnt be used then do NOT play this! This is a pure arcade, unrealistic and fun shooter. ![]() There is another game mode ive left till last which is.... Drum roll please........... MI6 OPS! Yep, thats right there's a Special Ops mode if you will for all those people who have played Modern Warfare games, this version is the same. Infact there's even similar achievements for getting Stars.. sounds familiar doesnt it??? In this game mode you will be able to choose from a load of specific single player scenarios. The types available are Elimination, (Kill everyone as quick as possible) Stealth, (kill everyone without being detected) Defense, (Download data and protect consoles from enemies) and finally Assault, (Get to the extraction point) These are out of 4 stars each and there are 11 levels. In order to get higher ranks you need to change a vast amount of settings from AI behaviour to having a quarter health... ive tried afew of these and so far only accomplished acouple of stars on afew levels.. getting all stars will prove a challenge!! ![]() The graphics arent bad for this next generation console but dont think GoW or MW graphics because its no where near as sharp and clear as the big guns but still very good, sound quality isnt all bad either, i use Turtle beach X31's and i can hear which direction a grenade lands or when someone is reloading while hiding behind a wall so cant really knock it for that. If i had to rate this i think id be around the 8/10 mark and thats purely due to the arcade feel of the game as its sooo easy and fun to play, unfortunatly i have a feeling that this game will be going cheap soon as there is far more on offer at this time of year for your £40 to be spent on and i dont think many will be playing it online for the same reason. I really hope im wrong but people should definatly give this a go as it would be a real shame if this went un noticed and became yet another underrated Bond game!! Achievements: Dont expect an easy ride with this one... a single whole playthrough will net you around 60-70gp! Thats it!! the rest is abit of a slog but luckily you can use level select as there are level specific achieves. The rest are obtainable in multiplayer, again, more info to follow. I welcome all constructive comments and will take note of everything mentioned. 8/10 Comments: 16 Social bookmarking |
